Welcome to Wendell Watson Guidance!!
Welcome to all 850 students and families to the 2011-2012 school year at Wendell Watson Elementary!!!        Hi!!  My name is Kristi Barham and I am the Guidance Counselor at Wendell Watson Elementary.  In fact I am the counselor for all 850 + children and their parents/guardians.  I love my job and am always available for any questions.

I do mostly classroom guidance and I am also avaiable for brief counseling as needed.  The theme of each classroom lesson focuses on subjects like respect, kindness, listening and following directions and peer pressure.  Each lesson is customized to fit each class and their developmental needs, I would not teach a lesson on peer pressure to kindergarteners.  I may, however, reteach a lesson on following directions to 5th graders.  My lessons follow Polk County Develpomental Guidance Curriculum.

School Wide Behavior System
Wendell Watson is a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) School.  We began implementing this program in the 2007/2008 school year.  That same year we were awarded model school status by the Florida Positive Behavior Support Project.  We were also awarded that honor this year.  Mrs. Grioux was invited to the national PBS conference 2 years in a row based on our implementation of the program.    Positive Behavior Support teaches students appropriate behavior and rewards appropriate behavior.  The PBS program is a proactive program rather than a reactive program.
The object of PBS is to encourage appropriate behavior in order to provide a safe and orderly learning environment that promotes excellence in all things.

Positive Atitude

Is your cup half full?  Do you biew problems as insurmountable obstacles or challenges with soulutions?

Optimism is the ability to see the positibe side of a situation rather than the negative; to focus on accomplishments rather than failures or "mis-takes": and the wherewithal to recognize and implement choices that serve your needs and intentions appropriately.  Optimism impacts ever aspect of your life, but the best new is it can be learned, modeled and taught.  Think about a time when your have had a problem, how did your child see you handle it.  Were you defeated or were you determined.  What example were you sharing with your child.  Take a step back and start looking at situations as the "cup half full".  Not only can it change you attitude, but it can change your life and your childs!!!!
